General Info:
Originating from China, the Peach fruit and its cultivars have become well known and loved throughout the world. The Peach tree, which is actually a part of the Rose family, is a deciduous tree that can grow approximately 13-33 feet in height and produces narrow green leaves and small, delicate blossoms in early spring. The flowers grow in pairs or alone and have five soft pink petals. The Peach fruit itself has a delicious scent and can either have deep yellow or whitish flesh. The very thin skin of the Peach can be fuzzy and velvety in texture or very smooth and glossy such as in the popular nectarine cultivar. The Peach has a single seed, or stone, in the center of the fruit and is oval shaped and rough in texture. This stone can either separate easily from the flesh of the fruit or cling to it, depending on the variety. Peaches are commonly enjoyed as fresh fruit and have a mellow, sweet, sometimes slightly acidic flavor. They are also often used in cooking and baking.
