Growing Area: : Forests of northern Eurasia and North America
General Info:
Lingonberry, also known as Cowberry, is a small evergreen shrub with white, bell-shaped flowers that mature into red fruits, ripening in late summer to autumn. The fruits are oval and small, about the size of a large pea, and are commonly used for specialty sauces, jams and jellies. They are often harvested in the wild. The Lingonberry plant prefers shaded areas and normally grows to less than a foot tall, spreading by underground rhizomes. It is extremely hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -40 degrees Celsius, but does not fare well in hot weather.
Nutrients & Applications:
Lingonberries are an excellent source of lignans and flavonoids, such as quercetin, and the seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids. Lingonberries are also full of vitamin C, vitamin A (beta carotene), vitamins B1, B2, and B3, and potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. They also have high levels of benzoic acid, which maintains their freshness without artificial preservatives. Lingonberries are helpful for supporting gastrointestinal and urinary tract health and maintaining normal cholesterol levels.
